Voller retains Bierhoff in Germany squad

First Published: Sep 28, 2000

Germany coach Rudi Voller has named the squad he wants to beat England in the last competitive match at the old Wembley stadium.

Voller has won both his games in charge so far including the first 2002 World Cup qualifier next month and now Germany face England on October 7th.

The coach has stayed loyal to the players who defeated Greece 2-0 last month with Oliver Bierhoff retained in the squad despite being dropped to the bench for the win over Greece. There is a good chance that Bierhoff will start the game at Wembley though.

Liverpool's Christian Ziege returns to the line up but his start to an Anfield career has seen question marks raised over his level of fitness after a long and bitter transfer process from Middlesbrough during the summer. Jorge Heinrich is injured with a hamstring strain and misses the game allowing Ziege to get a recall. Hamburg SV defender Ingo Hertzsch is on the only new cap made by Voller.

The squad in full -

Goalkeepers - Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich) and Jens Lehmann (Borussia Dortmund).

Defenders - Frank Baumann (Werder Bremen), Ingo Hertzsch (Hamburg SV), Thomas Linke (Bayern Munich), Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen) and Marko Rehmer (Hertha Berlin).

Midfielders - Michael Ballack (Bayer Leverkusen), Stefan Beinlich, Sebastian Deisler (both Hertha Berlin), Dietmar Hamann (Liverpool), Carsten Ramelow (Bayer Leverkusen), Mehmet Scholl (Bayern Munich), Dariusz Wosz (Hertha Berlin) and Christian Ziege (Liverpool).

Strikers - Oliver Bierhoff (AC Milan), Marco Bode (Werder Bremen), Carsten Jancker (Bayern Munich), Oliver Neuville and Paulo Rink (both Bayer Leverkusen).
