First Published: Apr 25, 2001

San Marino scored their first World Cup qualifying point for eight years as they drew 1-1 with Latvia in Riga.

Latvia took the lead in only the first minute of the game when Southampton star Marian Pahars was released on goal by a pass from Andrejs Rubins but the home team then handed the initiative to the San Marino team who are used to regular beatings.

Nicola Albani upset the form book in the 59th minute when he headed in from close range with goalkeeper Federico Gasperoni keeping out shots at the other end for San Marino.

San Marino drew 0-0 with Turkey in a 1993 World Cup qualifier to claim their last point in the competition.
