Milan talk over Rivaldo-Shevchenko swap

First Published: Apr 26, 2001

FC Barcelona are to offer Rivaldo is a swap deal for AC Milan star Andriy Shevchenko.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani is to meet Barcelona's general director Anton Parera and transfer consultant Josep Maria Minguella to discuss the possible move according to Catalan newspaper 'Sport'.

Rivaldo agreed stay at FC Barcelona for at least another two seasons after signing a new contract last year which ended his pay dispute with the Catalan club and any chance of a move to AC Milan.

The Brazilian received massive pay rise to £3 million this year with a rise to £4 million after that.

Barca rejected a £29 million offer for the reigning world player of the year from AC Milan in August

The owner of Milan - Silvio Berlusconi - named Rivaldo as one of their top transfer targets last year and are still interested in the Brazilian who is Barca's top scorer this season.

Milan denied signing the player after Spanish television claimed a £40 million world record transfer for the forward had been agreed by the clubs.

The Brazilian was unsettled after a contract dispute going back to 1997.

In that year the current world number one moved from Deportivo La Coruna to Barca in a £17 million transfer.

He is wanted by Milan who are prepared to release Shevchenko after two years to sign their long term target. Real Madrid have also looked at signing Shevchenko but Barcelona would prefer a player and perhaps cash to release Rivaldo.
