South African striker Benny McCarthy is to join Premiership strugglers on loan for a year.
The striker leaves Celta Vigo to move to 'Boro after the clubs agreed a loan spell which could end in June with the player making a permanent move to the north east club in a £6 million transfer.
Middlesbrough made a £6 million offer to Celta Vigo for the striker at the weekend and they are to off load with a view to selling him at the end of this season.
The South African joined the Galician club from Ajax Amsterdam in early 1999 but a recent cash crisis for Celta means they are now listening to offers for the South African international.
'Boro have yet to win under new manager Steve McClaren and want McCarthy to partner Croatian striker Alen Boksic in their attack.
Last year Aston Villa were very close to signing 22 year old McCarthy but Celta ended the transfer talks by demanding £12 million for the player.
