African Player to the Year Mboma to join Tottenham

First Published: Aug 29, 2001

Tottenham are to sign African Player of the Year Patrick Mboma from Parma AC for £8 million.

The Cameroon forward is expected in London tomorrow to finalsie the deal with medical checks which will see the striker join the Premiership side on a four year contract.

Tottenham want to strengthen their striking line up under new coach Glenn Hoddle with Sergei Rebrov currently partnered by injury-prone veteran Les Ferdinand.

The powerful and agile Mboma is seen as the ideal replacement for the former Newcastle star with the Ukrainian alongside him.

Mboma is also seen as a good target for Teddy Sheringham who plays just behind the strikers for Tottenham and the African star is a noted line-leader.

With Parma to sign Shabani Nonda from AS Monaco tomorrow and they are prepared to sell Mboma.

African Player of the Year Mboma joined Parma last year but is now up for sale with Sunderland interested in the summer in bringing him to England.

The 29 year old striker is a regular in the Cameroon national squad but holds an EC passport so his presence in the Tottenham squad does not mean he needs a work permit.

Mboma has spent a season with Cagliari but the Sardinian club were relegated. The striker has also played in the J-League for Gamba Osaka and will complete medical tests at the weekend.
