Italy and Milan worry over Maldini knee injury

First Published: Dec 19, 2001

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini was stretchered off in the 1-1 draw with Atalanta in Bergamo with suspected knee ligament damage.

The Italian veteran is a certainty for the national team squad if fit next May but he collided with Atalanta midfielder Damiano Zenoni and had to be taken off on a stretcher with at least some damage to his left knee.

Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni saw Udinese captain Valerio Bertotto damage knee ligaments in a Coppa Italia tie last week ruling him out of contention for the World Cup finals.
