Maldini wants Paraguay's World Cup job

First Published: Dec 20, 2001

Former Italy coach Cesare Maldini is on his way to the World Cup finals with Paraguay.

Maldini is to replace Sergio Markarian who was sacked after the South American country lost two meaningless World Cup qualifiers after clinching a place in Japan and South Korea next summer.

Paraguay approached the Italian coach last week and agreement is now close according to the former Milan boss.

"It's an important step forward if not a decisive one," said Maldini of the latest talks.

"I will probably go to South America after Christmas to sign on."

But Maldini wants coach Antonio Cabrini to join him on the Paraguay bench which has yet to be agreed by the Paraguayans.

Cabrini helped Italy to win the 1982 World Cup but was fired by Serie B side Crotone last month.
