United set to beat Lazio to Forlan signing.

First Published: Dec 31, 2001

Independiente have offers from Manchester United and SS Lazio for Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.

Lazio made contact with the Buenos Aires club last month about a move for the 23 year old forward but with the Rome club now looking to sign Tottenham striker Serhiy Rebrov, United have stepped up their interest in Forlan.

The English champions sold Andy Cole to Blackburn for $11 million on Saturday and have met Forlan's agents.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon has met Pini Zahavi and Ronan Katzev to negotiate personal terms for the player who has a Spanish passport and Italian ancestry.

United have won their last five matches to establish themselves as title favourites again.
