Schmeichel ends glorious Denmark career

Denmark goalkeeper peter Schmeichel has announced he is to retire from international football.

The former Manchester United star says he wants to concentrate on his club career after agreeing a new contract with Sporting Lisbon to extend the 37 year old's stay in Portugal to the end of next season.

The goalkeeper has extensive business interests and wants to end his 14 year career with Denmark and Sunderland's Thomas Soerensen should now be promoted to the first choice.

Schmeichel is one of Denmark's greatest ever players and won 128 caps for his country. he led their resurgence in the 1980s and 90s which culminated in the extraordinary Euro 92 win in Sweden after Denmark were given only a week to prepare following a ban on Yugoslavia.

The goalkeeper captained the 1992 team and led Denmark at two World Cup finals.
