Villa want Serna from Boca Juniors

Aston Villa are in talks with Boca Juniors to buy Colombian midfielder Mauricio Serna.

Villa broke their club record two weeks ago to pay out £9.5 million to Boca's rivals River Plate to sign striker Juan Pablo Angel who is a team mate of Serna's in the Colombian national team.

Adding the midfielder to the Villa squad may help Angel to settle in England but the 32 year old veteran is also wanted for his consistent play which helped Boca to win three major titles in 2000.

The hard running Serna is thought to be well suited to the Premiership game and Boca's continuing financial problems means an offer of £3.5 million could sign the player.

Villa have completed contract talks with goalkeeper David James and the England international has agreed a new deal which should keep him at the Birmingham club until 2004.
