Yugoslavia coach quits

First Published: Jan 29, 2001

Yugoslavia national team manager Ilija Petkovic has quit.

Petkovic returned last night to Belgrade airport after his team had won the Millennium Cup in India with a 2-0 win over Bosnia-Hercegovina.

The coach claimed he was making "a moral act" in a dispute with the Yugoslavian Football Association.

The FSJ is in the process of electing a new leadership with a February 18th vote set to replace the current bosses of Yugoslav football.

President Miljan Miljanic and Secretary General Branko Bulatovic will all be standing down along with other officials and Petkovic has resigned just four months into his new job. He replaced Vujadin Boskov after Euro 2000 which featured a 6-1 defeat by host nation Holland and one 2002 World Cup qualifier which they won 2-0 against Luxembourg.

Petkovic has seen Yugoslavia's World Cup plans stall after two matches were postponed after the political upheaval in the country in the autumn.
