SS Lazio want Galca and Umit

First Published: Jan 29, 2001

SS Lazio want to sign Galatasary star Umit Davala and are in talks with Espanyol to buy Romanian international Constantin Galca before the Italian transfer deadline.

The Turkish international is valued at £5 million while Espanyol want £3 million for Galca to ease their financial worries.

Galca is likely to join the Rome club this week but Davala may not be for sale just yet. His position is complicated by Galatasary's involvement in the suspension of the Turkish championship. A row over television rights has suspended the Turkish league for at least a week and lost gate revenue and the loss of a pay-per-view TV deal means Turkish clubs are looking to finance their operations with the possibility of selling stars until the title race can start up again.

Versatile midfielder Umit has helped the Istanbul club reach prominence in Europe and helped them to a treble last season.

He has played for Gala in almost every position but Lazio want him as a midfielder who can also provide defensive cover.

Galca is close to agreeing his transfer to the Rome club from the ailing Barcelona club.
