Fiorentina eye Austrian goalkeeper Manninger

First Published: Jul 26, 2001

Fiorentina want to sign Austrian international Alex Manninger from Arsenal.

The Italian club have been stricken by severe financial problems recently and need a goalkeeper to replace Francesco Toldo who was sold to Inter for £18 million last month.

There is no place in Arsenal's first team for the Austrian who was one of coach Arsene Wenger's first signings at the London club from Austrian club Graz.

Manninger has been told he can leave Arsenal and is looking for a new club for the forthcoming season.

Arsenal have retained veteran David Seaman for the new campaign and added Richard Wright from Ipswich Town to their squad for £5.5 million.

If talks do not go well with Arsenal then the Florence club will make an offer for Bodo Illgner as the German veteran is without a club after leaving Real Madrid.
