Rivaldo gets pay rise in FC Barcelona settlement

First Published: Jul 27, 2001

Rivaldo has seen his pay increased by FC Barcelona after threatening to quit the club.

The Brazilian top scored for Barca last season with 29 goals but said the situation at the club was "impossible" as he tried to get the Camp Nou outfit to honour apay deal struck last summer.

"Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has sorted out this situation," said Rivaldo, who spoke the Gaspart by telephone Thursday.

Rivaldo's wages will now top £4 million a season and make him one of the highest earners in world football.

He gave the club a ten day ultimatum on his web site to quit if his wages were not paid but SS Lazio said they were not interested in the Brazilian as their summer spending was now complete.

Rivaldo believed Barca were trying to sell him in Italy but the lack of interest from Lazio means his pay dispute with Barcelona has now been settled very much in the player's favour.
