Juventus to clinch Buffon deal next week

First Published: Jun 30, 2001

Juventus will sign Italian international goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon next week.

The Parma player is to be replaced by Francesco Toldo from Fiorentina - his rival for the Italian national team jersey.

Parma have laid out £20 million to sign Toldo in a new world record but will get £22 million in another record deal for a goalkeeper when Juventus sign Buffon on a five year contract next week.

Juventus have already signed Lilian Thuram from Parma and the 22 year old Buffon is to join the French star in Turin.

Both clubs are in the Champions League next year and Parma coach Renzo Ulivieri can now use Portuguese pay making star Rui Costa after his arrival from Fiorentina.

The massive outlay by Parma's backers - the dairy produce giant Parmalat - shows the club spending £52 million on two top world stars of the game as Parmalat continue to fund the club.
