2002 World Cup - Azerbaijan 0 Moldova 0

Three red cards saw Moldova reduced to nine men against Azerbaijan in Baku with the home team also seeing a man sent off in this 0-0 draw.

This was Azerbaijan's first point in group four but they should have won after Moldova's first choice goalkeeper Eugen Hmaruc was sent off in only the 14th minute by German referee Wolfgang Stark for a handball outside the penalty area.

This led to scrappy play rather than an advantage for the home team with Moldova determined to defend their point after such an early set back.

But in the 65th minute referee Stark took a hand in events again and red carded midfielder Serghei Epureanu for his second booking after a foul but Moldova survived with nine men by playing back around their penalty area and protecting their goal.

The Azeris' chance of a big finish was damaged in the 80th minute when Farukh Ismailov was dismissed for a second booking.

Azerbaijan stay bottom of the group with Moldova one place above them with two pints after four matches now for both teams.
