2002 World Cup - Northern Ireland 0 Czech Republic 1

First Published: Mar 24, 2001

The Czech Republic scored a lucky win in Belfast as Northern Ireland hit the woodwork twice in the second half.

The Czechs took the lead in the 11th minute when they produced the only piece of adequate finishing in the game.

A ricochet on the edge of the Irish defence went to Pavel Nedved and he snapped onto the half chance to hammer in a cross shot with his left foot.

Keith Gillespie was extremely unlucky to hit the post in the 55th minute after an accurate David Hughes cross. The Blackburn winger launched a diving header on target but was disappointed. Phil Gray suffered similar anguish when he drove a shot against the underside of the crossbar and followed it up with a shot that was desperately cleared off the line.
