Greece have ruled striker Nikos Machlas out of their 2002 World Cup qualifier in Athens on Wednesday night against Germany.
Machlas dropped out of a training game with a calf injury at the weekend and 31 year old Olympiakos forward Alekos Alexandris has been called up to replace him after an absence of three years from the national squad.
Machlas has struggled all season with injuries at Ajax Amsterdam but was expected to start in a game Greece is looking forward to.
The Greeks were encouraged by a poor German showing on Saturday night when Rudi Voller's team needed an 88th minute winner from teenage substitute Miroslav Klose at home to Albania.
