Russia lose Smerin for Faroe Islands game

Midfielder Alexei Smertin will miss Wednesday night's 2002 World Cup qualifier for Russia against the Faroe Islands in Moscow with a back problem.

The Bordeaux player has a lower back infection and needs surgery to remove a large pustular abscess according to the Russian squad doctor. Russia drew 1-1 in Moscow with Slovenia on Saturday and now need a win against the Faroe Islands who scored two late goals to beat Luxembourg. Celta Vigo star Alexander Mostovoi is now eligible for the Russia team after serving a suspension.
