French substitute Youri Djorkaeff equalled Jean-Pierre Papin's scoring record for his country with his 28th goal as Roger Lemerre's team overwhelmed South Korea in Seoul.
By the time Djorkaeff hit his 28th goal in 70 matches for France in the 80th minute, Lemerre's team were coasing after taking an early 3-0 lead.
Robert Pires played the ball in from the left hand side for Djorkaeff to take one touch and then pass the ball in off the post from the edge of the penalty area.
Guus Hiddink's South Korean side had enjoyed the majority of the possession in the second half but they could have been hammered in only the first thirty minutes by a French team missing Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit, Fabien Barthez and the great Zinedine Zidane.
France took the lead in the 7th minute when a deflected shot from Nicolas Anelka produced a corner kick.
Pires clipped it to the near post where South Korean goalkeeper Lee lost the ball in a chalenge with Christoph Dugarry and he crossed for Steve Marlet to hit a jumping volley which was deflected slightly on its way through a crowd of payers into the net.
By the 10th minute the Korean offside trap was starting to fall apart and a foul in the 18th minute on Anelka produced a free kick and the second goal.
Pires took the long range kick but claimed hand ball as it failed to get over the defensive wall but play carried on for the two seconds it needed for Patrick Vieria to launch a stunning and swerving free kick through Lee and high into the net.
Thirty seconds later and Anelka was fouled in the penalty area producing a spot kick for Dugarry but he wasted his chance by weakly hitting a low shot too near Lee who saved well and then held the rebound.
No matter for France as they completely dominated the match and Anelka set up a run by Eric Carriere down the right hand side with a wonderful chip pass to take out the Korean defence.
Anelka was in at the kill to score a lucky third goal as Carriere drove low into the centre of the penalty box for the PSG star and Steve Marlet to arrive at the same time and bundle the ball past an exposed Lee with Marlet clipping the ball off Anelka's knee for the former Arsenal and Real Madrid star to claim the goal for himself.
Carriere set up the fifth goal in injury time for substitute Sylvain Wiltord. The striker was put clean through down the middle and rounded a desperate Lee to hit the ball into an empty net.
