Confederations Cup - Australia 2 Mexico 0

First Published: May 30, 2001

Defending Confederations Cup holders Mexico lost 2-0 to Australia to continue a run of poor form.

Mexican players were slammed by their press after a 4-0 defeat against England in a friendly on Friday night and they showed little improvement as they got their Confederations title defence underway. Australia took their chancers and were the more committed side as they chased the ball down and threw the Mexicans out of their stride.

The only bright point for Mexico was the 157th cap for Claudio Suarez who equals the total set by Egypt's Hossam Hassan.

Defender Shaun Murphy set Australia on their way with a 19th minute cross which he dove to head in after Clayon Zane almost steered the ball in.

Australia dominated from the start of the game and their quick start to the match was emphasised by Josip Skoko's clipped cross shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Australia then protected their lead with ease.
