Dutch say Davids can play for them

First Published: May 31, 2001

The KNVB say they are appealing to FIFA after their midfielder Edgar Davids was banned from all matches from today.

The Dutch claim that FIFA sent a fax to the KNB two days ago in which Davids was cleared to play in a 2002 World Cup qualifier in Tallinn against Estonia on Saturday.

Both Davids and Portuguese defender Fernando Couto were suspended indefinitely today after testing positive for the banned steroid nandrolone after Italian league matches two months ago.

Davids is to travel with the Dutch squad according to coach Louis Van Gaal as they try to clarity his eligibility for the Estonia game.
