The Uruguayan federation have confirmed coach Victor Pua as the man in charge for their 2002 World Cup finals campaign.

The South American side defeated Australia 3-0 in Montevideo last night to take the 32nd and final place in Saturday's draw in Pusan for the finals next May in Japan and South Korea.

The former under-21 coach took charge after Uruguay sacked Daniel Passarella in February and Pua delayed his decision to stay on for the finals until after last night's win.

Uruguayan federation vice-president Jose Pedro Damiani confirmed Pua had agreed to stay as team boss after last night's win.
