Nesta: "My future is at Lazio" - for now

First Published: Oct 26, 2001

SS Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta refused to be drawn today by questions linking him with a move to Real Madrid next summer.

Nesta will captain Lazio at the weekend when Lazio face champions AS Roma in the Rome derby and has been linked to property purchases in Madrid with his agent after renewed interest from Real in the highly-rated Italian international.

"I'll stay with Lazio, because I signed a long contract. However, I don't know what will happen in the future."

Lazio signed a new contract with Nesta in March this year after close attention from Real and he is expected to move next July after the World Cup finals to the Spanish club. He has been one of Real president Florentino Perez' longterm transfer targets since last year and Lazio would want at least $45 million for the 25 year old.
