FIFA say decision over Australia v France has been reached

First Published: Oct 31, 2001

FIFA say they have reached a decision over the French trip to Australia and will confirm their decision tomorrow.

France coach Roger Lemerre selected eight Premiership players including four from Arsenal after the London club led a campaign to have the game scrapped.

The November 11th friendly in Melbourne saw Arsenal lead an 11-club lobby to have the two squads limited to one player from each club.

New FIFA rulings mean a player can only play a maximum five friendlies in a year and Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira have already reached this number.

Arsenal feel the midfielders should now be excused from the trip to Australia and FIFA will announce their interpretation of the new law tomorrow.
