Belgium name squad for Zagreb mission

First Published: Sep 29, 2001

Belgium have named the squad they hope will win qualifying group six and take them to the 2002 World Cup finals.

A draw in Zagreb against Craotia should be enough but Croatia can win the group if they beat Belgium and condemn Robert Waseige's team to the November play-offs. Hot striking prospect Wesley Sonck is retained by Waseige.

The squad in full -

Goalkeepers - Geert De Vlieger (Willem II) and Frederic Herpoel (La Gantoise).

Defenders - Bertrand Crasson (Anderlecht), Glen De Boeck (Anderlecht), Eric Deflandre (Lyon), Joos Valgaeren (Celtic), Nico Van Kerckhoven (Schalke 04) and Eric Van Meir (Standard Liege).

Midfielders - Walter Baseggio (Anderlecht), Bart Goor (Hertha Berlin), Timmy Simons (FC Bruges), Yves Vanderhaeghe (Anderlecht), Gert Verheyen (Bruges), Marc Hendrikx (Anderlecht) and Danny Boffin (Saint-Trond).

Strikers - Marc Wilmots (Schalke 04), Emile Mpenza (Schalke 04), Bob Peeters (Vitesse Arnhem), Wesley Sonck (Racing Genk) and Michael Goossens (Standard Liege).
