Madrid: target Hamann

First Published: Apr 27, 2002

Real Madrid have made a 22 million euro offer for Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann.

The former Bayern Munich midfielder joined Liverpool two years ago and earlier this season denied that he was considering a move to FC Barcelona.

Madrid are set to sell French ball-winner Claude Makelele to Serie A leaders Inter to help secure Hamann who is being offered to play alongside Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo.

Liverpool signed the German from Newcastle in 2000 and do not want to sell the 28 year old but Madrid have made a large offer as they cool on attempts to sign Patrick Vieira from Arsenal.

If Liverpool refuse the Hamann offer then Madrid may revive their interest in Vieira with Makalele set to join the Milan club.
