Madrid: Crespo to sign and then Vieira

First Published: Apr 29, 2002

Real Madrid are set to secure the signing of Argentina striker Hernan Crespo from SS Lazio.

The clubs have been in talks over a $50 million offer from Madrid for the former Parma AC star and Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano now meeting the player's agent Gustavo Mascardi to discuss wages.

The capture of Crespo is expected to be confirmed this week and the Spanish club may sell striker Fernando Morientes to help fund the move.

Madrid still want to sign Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira for next season and the London club's vice president David Dein admitted last night that the player's future was "uncertain". Juventus also want the player described by Dein as "difficult".

Arsenal are set to win the league and cup double in England and want PSV Eindhoven midfielder Marc Van Bommel to replace to Vieira and are optimistic that the Dutch international will join them.
