Nigeria coach claims Oliseh snubbing World Cup plans

First Published: Apr 29, 2002

Nigeria coach Adegboye Onigbinde says former captain Sunday Oliseh is ignoring his attempts to draft him for the World Cup finals.

Oliseh led the fractious Nigerian squad in Mali at the African Nations Cup three months ago and regularly clashes with Nigerian coaches.

His attempts to choose friends to play alongside him in the team led to Onigbinde dumping the former Juventus player as captain and Oliseh is now refusing to speak to the coach.

"I have sent people to speak to him on four different occasions telling him to call," Onigbinde told Nigerian television.

"And when I did not hear from him, I had to call him in Germany and left a message on his answering machine but up until now, I've not heard from him.

"I can't beg him to come and play for Nigeria. Since he has said he's no longer interested in playing, then we have to look for those who are interested."

The 27 year old Dortmund player has been exiled from the Nigeria squad along with Finidi George after the Mali experience and both wanted Onigbinde's predecessor Shaibu Amodu retained for the World Cup finals.

Nigeria play Kenya at the weekend in their next World Cup warm-up game but PSG midfielder Austin Okocha has withdrawn from the 30-man squad.
