Brescia star Roberto Baggio could play again in April.
The player's doctor says the 34 year old star is making quick progress from a knee operation three weeks ago as he tries to revive his chances of reaching the World Cup finals with Italy.
Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni told television show 'Controcampo' last night that Baggio was unlikely to make the squad for the end of May.
"I am a Catholic and I believe in miracles," said Trapattoni.
"But you need to ask any doctor how long he will need for technical and physiological recovery. I've spoken to Baggio and told him just to worry about coming back to play again."
The Italy coach also ruled out Serie A top scorer Dario Hubner of Piacenza from a World Cup call-up.
"He is top goalscorer and therefore could come under consideration. But at the World Cup you play a match every three days and you need time to recuperate. And players of a certain age can feel the pace."
Hubner is 35 years old and a regular smoker.
