Scolari defies Romario lobby again

First Published: Feb 27, 2002

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has again ignored veteran striker Romario in his squad to play Iceland next week in a friendly.

A media and fan campaign to restore Romario to the Brazil squad has been consistently ignored by Scolari.

Some newspapers are campaigning for Scolari to be sacked and replaced immediately with Carlos Alberto Perreira ahead of the World Cup finals but the former Palmeira coach remains defiant.

"There are 170 million people in Brazil and 170 million coaches but I make the decisions," said Scolari.

Only players based in Brazil will face Iceland but the game is again overshadowed by Romario.

CBF president - Scolari's boss - Ricardo Texeira has met the 37 year old Vasco striker to discuss his absence from the squad.
