Bilbao try for Mendieta deal

First Published: Jan 29, 2002

Athletic Bilbao are the latest club to show an interest in SS Lazio flop Gaizka Mendieta.

The Roma club spent £24 million to sign the Valencia midfielder in July but 'Marca' says Bilbao are keen to bring him back to Spain as Lazio look to cut their wage bill.

Mendieta is no longer a first team regular under new Lazio coach Alberto Zaccheroni and has only recently found a house in Italy amid constant speculation that he was heading back to Spain at the first opportunity.

The player wanted to join Madrid last summer but Valencia refused to do business with their Liga rivals selling the star to Lazio instead.
