Liverpool complete Xavier deal

First Published: Jan 30, 2002

Liverpool have completed the signing of Portuguese defender Abel Xavier from Merseyside rivals Everton.

Personal terms on the £800,000 deal were agreed by the two clubs yesterday and the 29 year old passed medical tests to accept a three and a half year contract with the Anfield club ahead of the Champions League player registration deadline on January 31st.

Midfielder Nick Barmby moved from Everton to Liverpool in July 200 but transfer business between the two clubs is rare. These are the only two players to move between the two clubs since the 1950s.

Everton put Xavier up for sale last week after failing to agree a new contract with the centre back who was free to leave Everton for nothing as a free agent in June.

The player was at Liverpool's Melwood training ground yesterday and trained today with his new squad.
