Chelsea revive Batistuta interest

First Published: Mar 25, 2002

Chelsea are back in the hunt to bring AS Roma striker Gabriel Batistuta to London with an offer of £120,000 a week.

Chelsea are prepared to make the veteran the Premiership's highest paid player on a two year contract with Roma prepared to release the 33 year old for a reduced transfer fee.

Batistuta has suffered poor form all season and is tempted to rejoin former Fiorentina coach Claudio Ranieri next season.

Fulham are also contenders to sign the forward who moved to Roma two years ago for £22 million and helped them to win the Italian championship last season.

But Chelsea may be forced to sell a striker to fund the Batistuta signing.

The veteran is a long-term target for Chelsea but the future of top scorer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink or young Icelandic star Eidur Gudjonsson may be threatened. AC Milan have been linked with Gudjonsson with FC Barcelona looking at the Dutch striker who has hit 27 goals this season so far.
