Arsenal: Pires injury means Almeyda is wanted

First Published: Mar 25, 2002

The loss of Robert Pires from Arsenal's midfielder has seen the London club ask Parma AC for Argentine Matias Almeyda.

Arsenal had been in contact with the Italian club over goalkeeper Sebastian Frey but have now turned their attention to Almeyda and want him for next season.

Pires will miss the rest of the league campaign and the World Cup finals with cruciate knee ligament damage in his right leg and Parma want around £8 million for Almeyda who joined them from SS Lazio two years ago.
