Vieira to look at new Arsenal contract

First Published: Mar 25, 2002

Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira says he wants to discuss a new contract with the Premiership club and does not want to join Madrid or Juventus in the summer.

The English side want to double the Frenchman's wages to keep him at Highbury and his current contract ends next summer.

Arsenal value the 26 year old former Milan player at around £40 million and a successful World Cup could see massive bids come in for Vieira but the midfielder says he wants to sort out his future at Arsenal before then:

"I know the club are making every effort to keep me and despite what I keep hearing I have not asked Arsene Wenger to sign reinforcements. Even if we haven't won anything so far this season we are still competing on two fronts so I am absolutely not disappointed that I chose to stay in the summer," said Vieira today.

"My situation is clear. I still have two years left on my contract with The Gunners and I will only leave if they decide they do not want me. People talk a lot about a transfer, but I feel good here. My relationship with Arsene is fantastic and now I will sit down with the club to talk about prolonging my stay."

Arsenal want to sign Parma AC's Argentine midfielder Matias Almeyda for next season after injury ruled out Robert Pires for the rest of this campaign. P>They also expect to sign San Lorenzo striker Saja soon.
