New Manchester City striker Paolo Wanchope scored twice to give Costa Rico a 2-1 win over Guatemala.
The Costa Ricans now top Group E of CONCACAF qualifying with two countries going through to the final stage of qualifying next year.
The US meet Barbados today in the same section.
The home side had two goals disallowed in a bad tempered match littered with fouls and poor passing but Wanchope - who joined City for £3.5 million last week - gave his team the edge.
He scored a diving header in the 33rd minute when veteran Hernan Medford provided the cross and put the home team 2-0 up in the 48th minute when he was allowed to run clear and hit in a low shot.
Second half substitute Dwight Pezzarossi scored the lone reply with a close range finish.
