2002 World Cup qualifier - Colombia 1 Uruguay 0

First Published: Aug 16, 2000

A late goal from Colombian striker Jairo Castillo saw Uruguay crash to a 1-0 defeat in CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2002 World Cup finals.

The Uruguayans tried to squeeze the life out of this Bogota match and played for a draw until Castillo cut inside on a run and fired a low drive beyond goalkeeper Fabian Carini.

The win takes Colombia up to 12 points in the section with more games due tonight. Brazil's 3-0 defeat by Chile has helped the Colombian cause though.

Colombia dominated the game in its early stages with Gustavo Mendez needing to clear a shot from Frankie Oviedo off the line and the same striker fluffing a close range header from a corner but Uruguay held on and eventually had two goals disallowed.

Dario Silva was adjudged offside after a neat clipped finish and Nicolas Oliveira dubiously penalised late on for hand ball.

The home team saw Gonzalo Martinez fire a shot against the crossbar and Inter star Ivan Cordoba missed a penalty which Carini saved well. The penalty decision was very harsh as Morantes fell over his own feet to earn the award.
