European qualifying for the 2002 World Cup has started with a 1-0 win in Talinn for Estonia.
The bulk of the qualifiers get under way next month with more than twenty matches scheduled in Europe for the weekend of September 2nd and 3rd but the Estonians made a good performance in the second half count to score three Group Two points.
The winning goal arrived in the 64th minute when Andres Oper was felled by Juli Sanchez in the penalty box. Martin Reim drove a low penalty kick into the net to score.
Estonia pressed on looking for more goals but they could not find any good finishes and had to settle for the single goal.
The Estonians face Portugal on September 3rd with Andorra playing Cyprus.
