Australia hit 11 goals past Samoa in Coffs Harbour to make their Oceania group record 66 goals in a week.
Fiji finished as runners up to the Australians with an 8-1 win over Tonga.
Frank Farina's side will now meet the winner of Oceania group two in a two-leg play-off in June.
Group two will be played in New Zealand in early June and will feature the host nation, Cook Islands, Tahiti, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
The winners will then play the fifth team in South America's qualifying group in a two-leg play-off in November for a place in the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.
Aurelio Vidmar, David Zdrilic, Tony Popovic and Archie Thompson all scored two goals each while Hayden Foxe and Scott Chipperfield netted one each as the Australians cored 8 times in the second half. Samoan defender Philipo Bureta also scored an own goal.
Esala Masi scored five goals in Fiji's 8-1 win over Tonga.
