Iceland overcame Malta by 4-1 after conceding an early lead to the home team.
Michael Mifsud scored on his debut for the Maltese in the 14th minute with a low drive but Iceland resumed control and led at the break after goals from close range by Tryggvi Gudmundsson and Helgi Sigurdsson just before half time.
Malta captain Carmel Busuttil ended his career in this game after making his debut against Iceland in 1982 and going on to play 113 times for Malta.
He saw his side go further behind in the 83rd minute when Smari Gudjohnsen hit a third goal with a rising shot and Thordur Gudjonsson completed the scoring in the last minute.
Iceland trail Denmark , Bulgaria and leaders the Czech Republic in their group.
