2002 World Cup - Republic of Ireland 3 Andorra 1

The Republic of Ireland conceded a lead to Andorra in Dublin but responded with three goals of their own in a laboured performance in the rain.

The visiting team looked vulnerable on every cross that the Irish sent in to their forwards but they did not use this tactic enough. Too many touches and over playing in their approach work allowed Andorra to defend with ten men back and the game was set up for a dour struggle until the visiting team decided to attack for a short spell.

Defender Ilderfons Lima headed in a free kick with a cushioned touch to score a great goal in the 33rd minute.

But Kevin Kilbane hit a shot home a minute later with Mark Kinsella putting Ireland into the lead many had predicted for them when he scored from close range in the 36th minute.

Gary Breen in the 76th minute completed the scoring after confusion at a set piece allowed him to score from close range.

Ireland lead their group on 14 points, three ahead of the Netherlands and Portugal. The Irish host Portugal on June 2nd in their next game.
