Brazil failed again to convince their fans that they have a good chance of reaching the 2002 World Cup finals and were booed from the field in Sao Paolo after another grim display.
The four times World Cup winners now occupy the fourth and last place in World Cup qualification and confidence was hardly restored after the defeat last month in Ecuador with a poor display in this game.
Peru equalised Romario's 66th minute effort with ten minutes left and dominated the final exchanges in the game and new national team coach Emerson leao hardly looks settled in his post after five matches in charge. Alessandro, Ewerthon and Leomar were all making their debuts for Brazil with Washington and Mineiro coming on as second half substitutes to make five new caps on the pitch and it showed in a lack of understanding which disrupted the chances to mount convincing attacks.
Romario was partnered by Ewerthon in attack but the pair were caught offside throughout the first half allowing Peru to settle and establish the defensive posture that dominated much of the game.
Peru goalkeeper Miguel Miranda was a spectator until Marcelinho forced him to touch over a 31st minute free kick in the home team's first attempt on goal.
Marcelinho and leomar both saw good snap shots saved by Miranda as Brazil pressed forward before half time.
By then the Sao Paolo crowd had been calling abuse to the Brazil stars and then cheered for Peru from half time but Leao's team saw Ricardinho and Ewerthon go close before Romario struck beat the offside trap and rounded Miranda to score his eighth goal of the competition after Vampeta had lofted the ball over the defence from midfield.
Brazil could not hold their advantage though and Pajuelo jumped above an out thought defence to head in the equaliser.
Miranda needed to save a Washington free kick which he touched onto the crossbar in a good piece of action and then saved at the feet of substitute Juninho Paulista after he broke through the defence.
Peru substitute Andres Mendoza almost handed Brazil a first ever home World Cup qualifying defeat when he led a quick break but goalkeeper Rogerio parried his effort.
