Two goals from Marcelo Salas helped Chile gain a draw in Santiago against Bolivia.
Both teams are effectively out of contention for the 2002 World Cup finals and Chile struggled to raise their game for much of this tie.
Julio Baldivieso put Bolivia into an 11th minute with a penalty kick and Salas equalised also from the penalty spot in the 35th minute.
But Bolivia took the lead again as Milton Coimbra converted a 73rd minute cross with a downward header.
Salas was on hand to draw his team level four minutes later with a close range finish with his head after Montecinos hit the bar but Chile remain only one place from the bottom of the CONMEBOL qualifying section and their hopes of glory next summer faded months ago.
Salas showed good form though and he will now return to Italy to finalise his £18 million move to Juventus by the weekend.
