Ukraine missed both coach Valery Lobanovsky and star striker Andriy Shevchenko for the trip to Riga but won a low key friendly 1-0.

AC Milan star Shevchenko stayed in Italy for personal reasons while veteran coach Lobanovsky has been suffering again with heart problems recently.

Latvia improved in the second half but could not find any real form in their finishing but by then they were trailing 1-0 largely thanks to a defensive error.

With time and space to think Latvia defender Imants Bleidelis mishit a back pass and sent it weakly iinto the path of striker Olexander Melashencko who hit an angled drive into the net to win the match.
