First Published: Feb 12, 2001

Sami Al Jaber scored three goals for Saudi Arabia as they won 5-0 in Dammam against Vietnam in Group 10 of the Asian qualifying zone for the 2002 Wold Cup.

The Saudi side are close to sealing their place in the second phase after this latest win in the group put them five points clear at the top of the section.

Talal Al Meshal opened the scoring in the 18th minute with his third goal in two matches with a close range shot and Al Jaber started his good work with a well placed 30th minute penalty.

Vietnam also conceded a sloppy goal when Al Jaber got clear in the 50th minute for the third goal but they then concentreated well in defence until close to the end when Al Meshal hit his second and Al Jaber hit a low drive in the 91st minute for his third.

Both teams have three games to go as do Bangladesh and Mongolia who met earlier in the day.

Bangladesh ran out 3-0 winners with two goals from Mohammed Alfaz Ahmad and a third goal in the 85th minute by Mohammed Rokonuzzanin for their first win in the group.
