2002 World Cup - Belgium 10 San Marino 1

First Published: Feb 28, 2001

Belgium shot to the top of World Cup qualifying group six with a 10-1 crushing of San Marino.

The tiny Italian state has only one professional player and he scored their sole replay to the double-figure rout.

Andy Selva scored from a long range free kick to register only their second goal in five years on internationals but this late effort could not disturb the Belgian domination of this one-sided match.

Belgium used the match to boost their goal difference and were 3-0 up inside half an hour.

Anderlecht midfielder Yves Vanderhaeghe hit a low dirve on ten minutes to start the scoring spree and Emile Mpenza hit the second in the thirteenth minute from close range before Bart Goor added a third with a cross shot.

In the 51st minute Vanderhaeghe scored his second of the night and Goor produced a great lob straight into the net after goalkeeper Federico Gasperoni lost the ball.

In the 64th minute Goor set up Walter Bassegio for a close range header and Marc Wilmots also headed in from the goal mouth for 7-0.

Substitute Bob Peeters scored a 12 minute hat-trick as the game reached bizarre levels of humiliation for San Marino with two shots on the run and a close range finish.
