2002 World Cup - South Africa 1 Burkina Faso 0

First Published: Jan 27, 2001

South Africa managed a scrappy win against Burkina Faso as 2002 World Cup qualifiers got back under way.

A 17th minute goal from Charlton striker Shaun Bartlett was their best piece of work.

Delron Buckley set up the close range finish with a pass across the face of goal which Bartlett ran in to reach.

Ironically Bartlett's Premiership team were involved in extra-time today in the FA Cup to subdue amateur London team Dagenham and Redbridge as he showed good awareness to finish the chance.

South Africa dominated the first half and Burkina Faso only got near goal when captain Lucas Radebe let Ismail Koudou get past him but he scuffed his shot wide.

Benny McCarthy had a close range clipped finish cleared off the line and South African officlas will now make a last attempt to persuade Radebe to rethink his decision to retire from the team and concentrate on his career with Leeds United.
