2002 World Cup - Egypt 8 Namibia 2

First Published: Jul 14, 2001

Egypt retain a tiny chance of reaching the 2002 World Cup finals after an 8-2 hammering of Namibia in Alexandria helped by a hat-trick in six minutes at the end of the first half from Bassiouny.

Realistically their qualification hopes are slim and they need Morocco to lose today against Senegal.

Egypt have 12 points in African group C, three points behind Morocco who need only one point from their Dakar game to ensure they qualify for the finals again.

Egypt complete their qualifiers on July 21st in Annaba against Algeria in what is likely to be an irrelevant match.

Egypt took the lead in the fourth minute with a low drive from Tarek El Said. before Mohammed Barakat added a second in the 37th minute. The visiting defence then completely fell apart and shipped three goals to Bassiouny to make it 5-0 at half-time.

Namibia went on the attack at the start of the second half with Mogale Naruseb and Erastus Gariseb scoring consolation goals but Barakat again and Mohammed Abougreisha and Abdelsattar Sabry added to the goal tally.
