2002 World Cup - Nambia 0 Senegal 5

First Published: Jul 22, 2001

Senegal have reached the World Cup finals for the first time after the 5-0 demolition of Namibia in Windhoek.

Their victory and Egypt's failure to win in Algeria sent Senegal through as group C winners in the first major upset of World Cup qualification for 2002. Morocco are also out after they completed their matches last week and had to wait and see how their rivals performed. To go through Morocco needed both Egypt and Senegal to lose but the Senegalese ended up two goals better off than their rivals to go through on goal difference.

Senegal took the lead after 15 minutes when Henry Camara weaved past two defenders and set up a shot for Pappa Thiaw whose glancing finish sent the ball through the legs of Namibian defender Steven Mbaisa and into the net past goalkeeper Danzyl Bruwer.

On twenty minutes Thiaw pulled the ball back for El Hadji Diouf to finish from close range.

Camara then sealed Senegal's place in the World Cup finals by crossing for Thiaw to hit in on the half hour.

Senegal continued to attack but lost Thiaw in the 69th minute for a red card after a second bookable offence for hacking down Quinto Jacobs from behind.

Steve Mbaisa conceded a penalty for a foul in the 79th minute which Khalilou Fadiga struck in and Diuf scored his second goal - and ninth of the qualifiers - from close range to send Senegal into a rare celebration of a major sporting achievement.
